As an ambassador for families who don’t want to move (but are worried),  we bring memory care home.

Here are a few strategies to coordinate this support so that you can sleep at night.

Medication Management:

Organize medications and allow caregivers to assist with medication reminders.

24/7 Security & Safety:

Add a smart doorbell with video so that you can see who is coming and going 24/7.

Increase home safety with durable medical equipment like toilet and bed rails and install grab bars in the shower.

Worried she is going to burn the house down? Replace the stove knobs with “smart knobs” so you can see when a burner is left on and turn it off from anywhere. Or replace the stove with an air fryer or griddle with auto shut off timers.

What if she goes for a walk and forgets how to get back home? Add the location permission and apps on her phone. Gift her a wearable GPS tracking device to monitor her location, (jewelry, watch, ring, necklace, keychains, etc) You can see her location should she have trouble wayfinding.

Fall Prevention:

Have her keep moving, stretching, and practicing balance exercises each day with a caregiver for fall prevention.

Declutter, does her day feel like a scavenger hunt?  Help her by keeping the home organized, and giving items of value to the loved one who is destined to receive them. Tell them the story, why the item is important, and take a photo to remind your mother of the blessing (you can refer to the photo when she says it was stolen because you have moved it)

Meaning & Purpose:

Make and keep a routine that stays similar each day, (Write it out on a large marker board next to a large digital clock with day/time).

Modify activities she can do with a caregiver that are joyful and don’t require recall or retention of new information.) These activities may include puzzles, memory games, music, reading, and arts and crafts.

Remember your Mom isn’t giving you are hard time, she is having a hard time.

Be patient and provide her the reassurance and familiarity that will keep her safe and thriving in the place she loves.

We will be her caregiver so that you can visit her as a daughter. Don’t ask her questions, don’t “test” her short-term memory just love her.
